Contrasts

This composition consists of three contrasting parts. The first part focuses on the whole-tone scale, a sequence of notes that never includes a semitone. From this impressionistic-sounding harmony, melodic fragments gradually emerge.
The second part is very sparse with musical material. It allows the soloist to fully utilize the dynamic range of the instrument. The deep, dark register of the alto clarinet comes into its own here.
The third and final part is an exciting dance full of breakneck rhythms and bar changes. Party until the end!
