Expansions” allows the pianist to taste color chords full of (unresolved) tension. These chords are not constructed like traditional harmonies (in third intervals) but are expanded into fourth harmony. A play arises between consonant (two perfect fourths sounding together) and hard, more dissonant (tritone + perfect fourth) chords that bring with them a jazz feeling. A persistent motif (obstinato) in the left hand (power bass) always provides momentum throughout the work.
