'Mayan Mysteries' is a three-part work written by Peter Leroy. The first part echoes the once mighty Mayan empire. Cities, roads, canals, pyramids and palaces have been overgrown by the jungle over the centuries. Many still mysteriously hidden from the modern eye... The second part describes a ritual procession in which a human sacrifice is made to the Sun God Kinich Ahau who had to protect the Mayans against disease and drought. Yet this could not prevent the disappearance of the empire. How and why the Maya left their cities cannot be said with certainty. Was it war? Persistent drought? Their own prediction of the end times? A subdued hymn as the third part honors what was once one of the greatest civilizations on earth: The Mayans.
