The Swirl

The Swirl is a short work for concert band that is composed almost entirely of one element. A six-note motif forms the basis for a rigid eight-bar structure. This is presented in the clarinet and gradually the entire orchestra ends up in a whirlwind of repetitive structures.

The motif is made up of a series of 5 pitches (sol-la-sib-do-re for instruments in Bb). The first two notes are a rising second, the next two notes are the highest and lowest notes of this series and form a falling fifth, and the last two notes make a falling second. After four bars there is a slight variation when the last two notes also form an ascending second. These intervals (fifth and second) also form the basis for transpositions of this motif.

The individual parts of this work are mainly simple; the challenge is bringing all these individual voices together.
Close attention to instrumentation and dynamics results in a composition that is repetitive but not boring. It is as if the lighting is constantly changing and new patterns gradually emerge from the repetitive basic motif. The orchestra gets the opportunity to play intimately, but also exuberantly (even briefly in the style of a Big Band).

An ideal composition at the beginning of a concert or, why not, as a surprising encore!
